Artwork Description

Trojan is part of Fanny Beckman’s ongoing project, Take Back the Streets – created in response to the many cases of harassment towards women and non-binary people in public and as a means of helping those portrayed to reclaim spaces that they have associated with fear.

Each image is made collaboratively, with subjects selecting locations that make them feel vulnerable or uncomfortable. In this photograph, Trojan, a young London-based trans woman, chose a train station – a place where she has experienced physical and verbal abuse numerous times and where her womanhood has been questioned time and time again.

By shining a spotlight on Trojan’s experience, and that of many others, the artist not only provides a platform upon which they can proudly affirm their identity but also creates conversations about the reality of women’s daily lives.

Quote about the theme

Ever since I took this photo, I’ve wanted to show it in public spaces. It’s powerful to be able to raise awareness of street harassment in similar locations as the picture was taken. It adds another layer to the artwork itself and I hope it encourages valuable conversations among the audience.
