STRAIGHT WHITE MALE

About the season

Season Theme: STRAIGHT WHITE MALE
Year: 2022
Commissioned Artists: 10

What does 'Straight White Male' mean in 2022?

10 artists from across the world created works in response to the words ‘Straight White Male’.

Following an open call in April 2022, we received more than 450 submissions from artists based in the UK and internationally. The 10 selected artworks are nuanced and thoughtful, covering everything from male identity and power to menstruation and manspreading.

The first cohort included work by public artist and Creative Director of The Gallery, Martin Firrell, a highly regarded LGBTQIA+ movement veteran known for his provocative interventions in outdoor spaces.

Launched in partnership with the Out-of-Home* industry including Clear Channel and JCDecaux, the 10 artworks were on view in outdoor advertising sites across the country. The artworks invaded towns and cities across the UK, from London, Birmingham and Newcastle, to Aberdeen, Belfast and Cardiff, reaching millions of people over a four-week period. A retrospective of Season 1 was also displayed for the public to view for free at The Truman Brewery in London.

*The term Out-of-Home refers to any visual advertising media found outside of the home, including on-street billboards, digital screens, bus-shelters and train stations.
