Artist Bio
Hannah Starkey (b.1971, Belfast) explores the physical and psychological connections between the individual and her everyday urban surroundings. Elements of street photography and cinematic narrative are evident in her work which focuses on the female perspective and experience, often revealing women in moments of private reflection, alienation or social interaction that might otherwise go unseen.
The artist collaborates closely with actresses, as well as anonymous acquaintances she meets on her travels, to develop intricately textured scenes. Stark architectural backdrops and strong associations of colour and imagery heighten the sensation of her compositions on both a formal and associative level, triggering personal interpretations and a deeper mediation on the experience of the visual world at large.
Artwork Description
These portraits are taken from a photographic series entitled DEFEND MOTHER EARTH, which documents and celebrates the many female elders who regularly descend on Westminster to advocate for the environment, and who defy stereotype. The project helps to amplify the voices of people who may not shout the loudest or feel the most enfranchised, and to convey their message to those that make the decisions on the welfare of our planet.
