Artist Bio
Hugh Malyon is a Southwest-UK based disabled artist who connects and engages with space and audiences to shift perceptions of disability towards positive identity.
After touring Me & My Voice regionally, Hugh co-devised digital responses to Covid-19 restrictions with Squeeze Box. The project used disability as a lens to platform the value of care through combined live sound, projection and performance. In 2022, Hugh joined Another Route fellowship to expand understanding of shared generosity, community and collaboration across borders; smashing barriers in his wake.

Artwork Description
Cattle fodder, pigswill, ready and waiting to feed ‘The System’. Hugh Malyon’s multiplied body, shrunken, exposed, neglected is manipulated tightly into a sardine tin, portraying the direct impact of ableism and intersectional discrimination. The work represents being squeezed into a TickBox with all care, compassion and empathy stripped away.
“Maybe it is easier to conform and silently cram ourselves into sardine tins? Some have no choice! Repeating narratives of disabled bodies having to ‘fit the stereotype, have the same needs, desire only to be fixed’, perpetuates an exhausting soul-sapping system – both the symptom and cause of ‘The State We’re In’.” – Hugh Malyon
