Season 4
15 July – 12 August 2024
I hope the different perspectives presented by our artists in response to the phrase A Real Woman will inspire viewers to consider the plurality of womanhood, and thereby encourage understanding and empathy towards those whose lives are shaped differently from their own.
Bakul Patki
Curator, The Gallery – Season 4
11 works by international artists explore the theme:
A REAL WOMAN

“When approaching the subject ‘A Real Woman’, I felt it crucial that this was not a question to be answered, but rather a statement to be considered. There is no single or simple definition of a woman. I hope the different perspectives presented by our artists will inspire viewers to consider the plurality of womanhood, and thereby encourage understanding and empathy towards those whose lives are shaped differently from their own.” – Bakul Patki, Exhibition Curator.
A Real Woman was displayed on thousands of outdoor billboards and digital screens across the four nations of the UK from 15 July – 12 August 2024.
Curated by Bakul Patki, the exhibition explores a multiplicity of bold responses to the theme ‘A Real Woman’, addressing potent and contested ideas, such as gender identity, health disparity, the domestic realm, and feminism.
A Real Woman features works by Sin Wai Kin, Joanna Hogg & Nick Turvey, Fanny Beckman, Raven Gough, Rachael House, Aljohora Jeje,Eri Maeda, Cristiana Nogueira, Georgie Wileman, Frances Willoughby, and Dawn Woolley.
The commissioned artworks are all part of The Gallery, a cultural institution conceived by Artichoke, in collaboration with public artist Martin Firrell, that aims to challenge traditional models of viewing art, by bringing it to the public. The Gallery is the result of a unique partnership with the UK advertising industry including the industry leaders, Clear Channel,JCDecaux and Alight Media.
