Learning
From the UK to Brazil
For its fifth season, The Gallery partnered with the British Council Brazil as part of their UK/Brazil Season of Culture with Instituto Guimarães Rosa. 16 powerful artworks were exhibited in response to the theme It’s Not Easy Being Green across the UK and Brazil.
Cultural Exchange
60 students from four schools across the UK and Brazil are designing artworks that will be shown on billboards in both countries in March 2026. As part of our Learning & Participation programme, local artists are guiding the students through personal reflection and creative exploration of the Season 5 theme.
Through an online exchange, the students have been sharing ideas and reflecting on how both culture and local context influence their thoughts on climate change.
These varied perspectives will shape artworks that will appear on billboards in both countries, giving the young people the opportunity to see their work showcased on a national scale.

Behind the Season 2 Artwork “What We Do”
Season 2 artists Becca + Clare worked with young people and our Learning & Participation team to create their artwork, What We Do.
The work was created in collaboration with young people from The Trinity Centre Arts Club who have experienced the asylum system. The image depicts a domestic scene constructed entirely from cardboard, representing the fragility and transitional state of the migrant experience.
The wallpaper explores themes of belonging and precarity and was designed and screen-printed by the young people. The rest of the scene shows several young participants engaged in activities that offered them solace during the uncertainty of the pandemic. Discussions highlighted that for many, these practices provide a sense of comfort and agency amidst the chaos.

The People’s Gallery
Since 2022, we have delivered a programme of workshops exploring the themes addressed by The Gallery, providing young people with insight into the history of public art and the opportunity to create their own artwork.
BELFAST
We worked with Array Collective to deliver workshops for anyone aged 16-25 at The MAC. Based in Belfast, Array Collective were the first Northern Irish artists to win the Turner Prize and are known for producing collaborative actions in response to socio-political issues.
L&P workshops in Belfast supported by Arts Council of Northern Ireland and Esmé Mitchell Trust.
CARDIFF
We also collaborated with Fio, a Cardiff-based arts organisation which exists to provide positive change in the cultural sector in Wales. Creative associate, Cara Walker, ran four progressive workshops with young people exploring some of The Gallery’s themes as inspiration to create art using different mediums.
L&P workshops in Wales supported by Colwinston Charitable Trust and The Ashley Family Foundation.

“The Gallery workshops really opened up the students minds about what art can be and how messages can be delivered to the masses.”
